Terri teaches humility
Terri sang a karaoke love song like a seasoned performer at the Salvation Army last Saturday evening. She sang to no one, but her boyfriend who was off to one side. Light poured from his battered face. Christopher has evolved from mountain top singing to nearly perfect control of the microphone and without noticeable strain in his voice. He’s becoming a master. Another man sang professionally of love then began crying. The Equity Queen hugged him. Lance Armstrong covered his hands with thick red gloves then swung his arms wildly like an Antarctic explorer waving to the rescue plane. Gavan sang ahead of the lyrics then lost track and fell behind and it didn’t detract from his performance at all. The Man Formerly Known as the Drug Addict kicked chairs in a short argument with Theresa then left. He was having a hard night. A woman bubbling with ego sang in a washed out voice that drew ridicule, which changed to awe in reaction to her sincerity. I missed the other singers. John Swan ran the karaoke machine like a cold professional until he gestured his approval to each singer in a different way. He’s both detached and present and he lives in real time rather than in time from somewhere else. 7 July 2016 Vince Focarelli’s Tuesday free soup
I phoned La Fig restaurant on Carrington Street on Tuesday afternoon about their free soup for the homeless. A woman said it was from 7:00 - 7:30pm in the laneway back of the restaurant and that they would raise the roller door. At 7:00pm, I was the only one waiting outside the metal roller door. By 7:15pm it was still down so I left. 5 July 2016 A sad walk
Walking around the Parklands on Saturday I discovered a dozen homeless camps including those occupied by people one might expect to see in retirement villages. It was a sad walk to see how those desperate humans must hide and live with minimal tarpaulins and camping gear to conform to Lord Mayor Martin Haese’s rules against “defensive architecture”. The six tents along Hutt Road have gone and been replaced by a loaded shopping trolley and a dozen people sitting underneath a tree. A huge camp on the northern side of the West Terrace cemetery has been “cleared”. Council storm troopers come down hard on homeless people trying to maintain their health by setting up tarpaulins to stop the winter rain from soaking their bedding while they sleep. 6 July 2016 Hutt Street Centre
A client last week praised Brenda’s sweet and sour pork main meal, and the pineapple concoction dessert that followed it. Another client said that Ian Hinch-Cox kicked out six people when someone threw a lighter at another guest. A third person said her doctor told her to avoid homeless joint food because it made her blood sugar skyrocket. She ignored his advice. Sister Gwen has reportedly retired or gone somewhere else. What a loss in a non-commercial way. 6 July 2016 Man throws hot soup on The Ghost
A guest at the Romero Soup Van threw a Styrofoam bowl of soup on The Ghost Who Walks. The Ghost wears thongs and shorts in winter and suffered burns on one leg and foot. The Ghost has severe diabetes and has trouble healing from foot and hand injuries. The burns prevented him from driving for a few days, but Frankenstein was in town and drove him around. The assailant was the Vietnamese man who bleaches his hair and goes to Flinders University. He is about 32 and has fragile thin legs from polio, and suffers continuing muscular problems. He’s usually withdrawn and polite, and has a good reputation. He was angry because The Ghost grabs so much stuff. Few people know that The Ghost gives away much of what he gets, plus money. The Ghost has forgiven him. 6 July 2016 Fagan-Schmidt’s disinformation
Alice Clarke from ShelterSA was talking about the need for “crisis housing” for people living outside. She said the bus station occasionally provides shelter during extreme weather, but had been closed last night. Phillip Fagan-Schmidt, Executive Director of the Housing Trust argued against making the bus station available. He said people would be better off staying at places that provided full facilities. Was this a ridiculous statement? I phoned Catherine House, arguably the premier refuge for homeless women in the Adelaide CBD, and was told they were always full and had a waiting list. I then phoned the St Vincent de Paul homeless shelter and a man there said they were full and frequently hadn’t any vacancies. It seems that Fagan-Schmidt is either ignorant of the homeless scene or was wilfully trying to misrepresent the suffering of those sleeping outside, as if they could have avoided the experience. 5 July 2016 (above) Theft of bedding by Adelaide City Council storm troopers creates a certain indifference to the caring and preservation of bedding and personal items. If the confiscated and destroyed items were kept for a year then displayed at Christmas in Rundle Mall, we would see how much wastage and cruelty is inflicted on a few desperate humans with thoughts and feelings like anyone else.
Jenner’s Generosity
Wendy Jenner of Dynamic Sports and Leisure in Dudley Park donated a pair of wheels for the St Bede’s Drop-in-Centre ping-pong table. This is the second set she has provided at no charge. 5 July 2016 The Cat Stealer
“Just letting you know that I spoke with the woman florist in Whitmore Square today about the cat, and asked her if "Robbie" was Robert Hannah. She replied that his surname was something that sounded like "Zugliani", (very different to "Hannah"). I remarked that it sounded like an Italian name but she was adamant that the fellow was Polish.” Cheers, Blithe Spirit 5 July 2016 From the Contact Page
“Mission Australia’s ugly ads, Just like the Salvation army adverts, I THINK ITS ALL A SCAM , HUTT ST, SALVATION ARMY, VINNIES, RELIGION IS A SCAM in general, taking from people by using guilt . You'll get into heaven if you do this ...bla bla ... it says it in the bible. bla bla.... well guess what , when you dead your dead thats it people its all over, and the people that spend there whole life in it are fools. sucked in by guilt and blackmailed into believing that there is something after death. Make use of your time here, see the world experience everthing. because you only pass by once.” Anonymous 5 July 2016 Port Adelaide football club at Hutt Street
Breakfast this morning at Hutt Street Centre was served by Port Adelaide football club players. It consisted of a large serve of bacon and scrambled eggs plus the usual three slices of toast with a bottle of tomato sauce on each table. Diners were offered a choice of tea or coffee. At least one diner was heard to say, “This is better than the usual leftovers from previous lunches we are usually served. Pity it takes a publicity stunt to be served decent food.” 5 July 2016 Fulham Funerals not a bunch
