Free Dentists and Homeless-friendly doctors for people in Adelaide, South Australia
Dentists
Australian Dental Health Foundation
Free ongoing dental work at a private dental clinic once you’re signed up. The process may take up to six months, but is worth it. They do fillings, cleaning, extractions, partial and complete plates, root canals, but not reconstruction or implants. They’re experienced dentists and nurses and not students.
Clients must have a Health Care Card plus a referral from a case manager. For more information contact Dianne Travers on 0408 505 948 or [email protected].
Common Ground 73 Light Square, Adelaide. ph 8205 1600
University of Adelaide dental students perform basic dental work without charge.
You need a referral from a homeless joint though sometimes self-referral will be accepted. The process is secretive, but they like patients who live outside or are unable to use the Dental Hospital or private clinics. Free.
Hutt Street Centre 258 Hutt Street, Adelaide. (near South Terrace) ph 8418 2400
They can fast track you to a student dentist for pain and infection control. Free.
Emergency treatment from senior student dentists costs $58. Treatment from suburban government clinics require a year or two on the waiting list and costs half that. Don’t pay them a cent. You can get it free with a voucher from UnitingCare Wesley, Salvation Army or from similar welfare joints.
Primarily an Aboriginal medical clinic, but they will treat non-Aboriginals. Make an appointment by phone. Don’t mention it if you’re a non-Aboriginal. The first visit is the most difficult, but they’re more accepting to non-Aboriginals if you’re from the homeless scene.
The nurses and doctors listen carefully to the patients. They can fast-track patients to specialist care when urgent. It’s a wonderful clinic.
